MMA fans who love the UFC hate to miss an event, but there’s no reason why a visit to Rio de Janeiro should stop you from catching all the latest fights as there are plenty of ways to watch the UFC in Rio de Janeiro. MMA events in Brazil have got the best atmosphere of anywhere in the world, and seeing one live is obviously the best choice! Getting tickets for UFC in Rio isn’t easy: they sell out fast and are not cheap, usually upwards of BRL$500, but if you can get your hands on a ticket or two it is DEFINITELY worth it. The crowd sing and shout, scream and holler with a volume unlike anywhere else. The atmosphere of any sporting event in Brazil is something special, but the energy at UFC Rio is on another level. When fan favorites like Anderson Silva or Jose Aldo are victorious, it feels like the roof might come off! Watching the UFC in Barra If you can’t get tickets to see the UFC live, then watching it at a bar is the next best thing. One of the most popular places is Sport TV in Barra da Tijuca, found on Avenida Erico Verissimo in Barra da Tijuca. At Sport TV there are big screens all over the bar showing the fights, and the table service means you’ll have a steady stream of food and drinks brought to you throughout the event. Sport TV broadcasts almost all UFC events, including those in the USA and elsewhere, not just those from Brazil. The best thing is that you’re likely to see and meet many local MMA personalities there, who congregate on the bar to watch the fights. Fans have met fighters such as Minotoro, Rafael Feijao and more. For people staying at the popular BJJ hostel Connection Rio, the closest place to show the UFC is Bar do Oswaldo, a well-known establishment owned by a 4th degree BJJ black belt. Only 5 minutes walk from the Connection Rio house, Bar do Oswaldo is a popular place to see the UFC and the cheap drinks make it an inexpensive night out! Watching the UFC in Zona Sul For the UFC fans in Zona Sul, there is the Devassa bar in Ipanema, found on Rua Visconde de Piraja. The Bar is co-owned by a BJJ black belt who loves UFC, and they play many major sporting events such as international soccer and even NFL and NBA games. Everyone piles out onto the street and watches through the windows when the bar gets busy when a UFC is showing, especially if there is a Brazilian in the main event, but the excellent choice or beer and great atmosphere make this a good choice for watching the UFC in the tourist area of Rio. Watching UFC on TV Big events are broadcasted on pay-per-view, but you can watch some events on free channel Globo TV. The main event fights from UFC on Fox events are shown on free TV and draw massive numbers. Also, you can watch The Ultimate Fighter: Brasil which is also shown on Globo. — For more tips and advice like this make sure to subscribe to our newsletter, it’s free and takes only a few seconds.

One of the attractions of training in Rio de Janeiro is its rich history of jiu Jitsu and vale tudo. Rio is home to some of Brazil’s biggest teams and fighters and if you go to the right spots there’s always a good chance you’ll spot jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts celebrities, from old school heroes to up and coming sensations. There’s something about seeing the likes of Anderson Silva grabbing an acai at his local juice bar that beats waiting in line for a quick handshake and a photo at a convention or martial arts expo. The only problem is explaining to your non-training friends just why you’re so excited about your picture with some guy with cauliflower ears. Where can I meet famous fighters? At the Gym When training at one of Rio’s academies, you might find yourself training under or even alongside some famous faces – or even hanging out with them after class. Many top tier fight teams have separate training for their fight teams, but even at Nova Uniao or Brazilian Top Team you might see pro fighters joining in with regular sessions. Visiting a gym is a great way to see your favourite fighters in action. Brazilians, and Cariocas (natives of Rio) in particular, are renowned for their welcoming nature and this is also true in the fight game. Most academies are more than happy to open their doors to gringos, while fighters tend to appreciate recognition from abroad. Some companies organise trips to academies, but you can also do this on your own. If you train regularly at a gym you’ll have a better chance to get to know the fighters and coaches. You can also visit lots of different gyms for a chance to meet and train with the top teams in Rio.
BJJ Tournaments There are tournaments almost every weekend in Rio. Local events attract plenty of black belt competitors, while bigger events such as the Rio Open see BJJ royalty such as Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, Fabio Gurgel or Terere in attendance, as well as up and coming stars like the Miyao brothers. MMA events Rio has a thriving MMA scene. Events such as Shooto, Bitetti Combat and Jungle Fight always feature up and coming fighters from established teams such as BTT, Nova Uniao or Team Nogueira. You’re very likely to see more established names there to corner teammates, such as Vitor Belfort, the Nogueira brothers, Jose Aldo, and many more. The Beach Outside of training and fighting, Cariocas, as natives of Rio are known, are famed for their love of the beach and fighters are no exception. The jiu jitsu lifestyle revolves around training, surfing, and hanging out on the beach. Ipanema and Copacabana draw fighters from nearby academies, such as BTT or Checkmat, while the Nogueira brothers can often be seen running along the beaches of Barra da Tijuca. Many fighters can be seen on Praia do Pepe, a well known surfing spot and social hub on Barra beach. Bars and Restaurants Fighters need to eat too, and knowing the best places can increase your chances of bumping into your idols. Bibi Sucos is a celebrated chain of juice bars, known for its healthy food and acai. It’s no surprise that it’s popular with local fighters: even fighters from out of town have been known to drop by to check out the food. Anderson Silva is a regular visitor, while Renzo Gracie, Vitor Belfort, Junior Dos Santos and Braulio Estima have all been seen eating there. Social Media Many fighters are prolific social media users. Instagram and Twitter are especially popular. UFC fighter Milton Vieira often posts his whereabouts, while 135lb UFC interim champ Renan Barao and Dudu Dantas, Bellator bantamweight champion and Nova Uniao standout, can often be found checking into eateries near their Flamengo headquarters. Another visitor discovered that he was sitting on the same stretch of beach as Kyra Gracie shortly after she posted a picture on Instagram.

Known as the home of many amazing MMA fighters, Nova Uniao is also a jiu-jitsu powerhouse with a huge team and many international representatives. Founded by Andre Pederneiras, a Carlson Gracie student, and Wendall Alexander, who comes from the non-Gracie ‘Fadda’ lineage, the team was formed in 1995. Though the name Nova Uniao is maybe best known in connection with MMA thanks to fighters such as Jose Aldo, Renan Barao, Dudu Dantas, Vitor Shaolin Ribeiro, Marlon Sandro and more, NU boasts a huge team of solid grapplers. Robson Moura, Leo Santos and even BJ Penn have won gold in the gi while representing Nova Uniao. The Rio HQ in Flamengo is a little off the beaten path for tourists and travellers but the team are welcoming to foreigners wishing to train there. The gym is on the top floor of a huge health club that boasts a swimming pool, Pilates rooms, a full weights gym and even a rehab centre. The training area is a very long plain matted room divided into two mats by a boxing ring in the middle. Though maybe only 5m (15ft) wide, the gym is very long, around 40m. The walls are also matted. It is possible for foreigners to train MMA at Nova Uniao, but not everyone is permitted. Pederneiras is selective of who he allows in and will want to know your team affiliation and record as well as seeing you train in BJJ and Muay Thai sessions. Even then, he may decline you. A Typical Class Warm-ups are energetic and usually led by one of the brown belts. They consist of running and plenty of movements such as shrimping, breakfalls, animal movements and such. You will be thoroughly warm by the time you are done. The technique portion of training is relatively brief. The coach, often ‘Dede’ himself, will demo usually only one position (sometimes more). This may be a submission attack, a sweep or reversal , or a pass. You will be paired off to drill the technique. Coaches roam the mat offering feedback and instruction. Rolling is both technical and competitive. The large competition team push each other and the results are evident in their many podium finishes. Our thoughts Nova Uniao is one of the biggest and best teams in BJJ and MMA for a good reason. They boast a large team with a huge depth of talent; Dede once told me his team has around 300 black belts around the world. The training there is similar to what you can find elsewhere, but it is the wide variety of training partners that makes it special.
